In our last post, we addressed Donald Trump’s speech on the first day of the World Economic Forum. Davos 2020 is one of the biggest events in the world when it comes to issues regarding the economy. However, that is not everything. World leaders and the business elite are not the only ones to be invited. It is common that celebrities and influential activists get to speak their minds on subjects concerning ways of improving the world. For instance, since this year the reunion will focus on climate change, the presence of Greta Thunberg in Davos was expected.
Besides, it is a wide known fact that the young activist is skeptical with respect to Donald Trump’s government. Even when he disrespected the Paris Agreement, something that is a hallmark for Davo’s attendees, he was invited to give a speech at the conference. According to him, the efforts to bring awareness regarding the environmental issues have been dealt with pessimism. To the US president, activists like Greta are “prophets of doom”.

Before having the chance to speak, Thunberg had to listen that people with her concerns are “heirs of yesterday’s foolish fortune tellers.” However, when she began to speak, the young activist punched a hole in the promises being made and offered an ultimatum. Check below some of the greatest highlights of Greta Thunberg in Davos!
Greta versus Davos: highlights
“I wonder, what will you tell your children was the reason to fail and leave them facing the climate chaos you knowingly brought upon them?”
This is an appeal that we see in Greta’s speeches with great frequency. She is always worried about bringing the future of our species into consideration. It seems to be her understanding that world leaders are always concerned about the present moment, with no care about the future.
“Our house is still on fire… Your inaction is fueling the flames by the hour”
According to the speech of Greta Thunberg in Davos, we have done nothing in order to prevent climate chaos. Regarding proposals as offsetting emissions by planting one trillion trees, Greta stated that they will not help. This is particularly important because, minutes before that, Donald Trump said that the US would be joining the WEF’s one trillion trees initiative.
“Let’s be clear. We don’t need a ‘low carbon economy.’ We don’t need to ‘lower emissions’…Our emissions have to stop.”
Finally, Greta remembered all the invited tycoons that what they have been doing is close to nothing. To her, stoping the carbon emissions is the only way of doing something effective towards the environment.
